Physical Properties of Rose Quartz
Rose Quartz is a type of quartz crystal which is a compound of silicon and oxygen with the chemical formula SiO2. The rose colour is due to trace amounts iron, manganese and titanium.
It is reasonably hard with a Mohs hardness rating of 7 making it reasonably difficult to carve.
The colour of rose quartz is very stable and will not face when exposed to heat or sunlight.
The History and Legends of Rose Quartz
Rose quartz was known to the ancient Egyptian, Roman and Tibetan cultures as well as the ancient Chinese.
Prized in the ancient world as both a stone of love and physical beautification facial masks of rose quartz have been recovered from ancient Egyptian tombs (1). It was thought by both the Romans and the ancient Egyptians to clear the complexion and prevent wrinkles.
Both Greek and Egyptian legends tell of the Gods using rose quartz crystal to maintain their youth and beauty.
One Greek legend tells a beautiful tale of the origins of rose quartz. In this legend Adonis the lover of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite was attacked by Ares the God of war in the form of a boar. Aphrodite rushed to save him and caught herself on a briar bush. Her blood dropped onto the clear quartz crystal staining it forever pink.
The fact that it was the blood of Aphrodite the Goddess of love that created the beautiful pink colour shows clearly the ancient association between rose quartz and love.
It is also believed that ancient healers in Australia made a sacred water out of this stone that was believed to be a panacea (2).
At various stages in antiquity it has also been known as the heart stone, Bohemian ruby or Silesian ruby. Love tokens of Rose quartz have been found that are believed to date from 600BC (3).
Healing and Spiritual Uses of Rose Quartz
Rose quartz is a stone of the heart and is associated with unconditional love. It is believed to have a feminine energy compassion, peace and nourishment. It is not surprisingly associated with the heart chakra.
In addition to others rose quartz is believed to inspire a love of ones self and of beauty, art, music and the written word.
It is believed to encourage sensuality and tenderness and some have considered it an aphrodisiac.
It is a calming and nurturing crystal which is often recommended in times of crisis, such as a mid life crisis as it aids acceptance of necessary change.

Rose Quartz Rollers, Rose Gua Sha and Rose Quartz Crystal Combs
Rose Quartz like other types of quartz is quite hard and fairly difficult to carve. Many groups chemically treat the crystal to make this process easier and less expensive.
Chemical treatment of course alters the properties of the crystal and reduces if not eliminates the spiritual and healing properties listed above.
